Scientist Rebellion: What It Takes

Illustrated by Julianne Park. All rights reserved.

Scientists from around the world are partaking in protests against climate change. They are worried that even after showing the public overwhelmingly obvious evidence of climate change, they are being ignored.

Scientists are the world’s leading authority about our planet, and if they see it necessary to put their lives and reputations at risk in order to show us what is happening, we are in really big trouble.

Nasa scientist Peter Kalmus chained himself to the JP Morgan Chase bank, declaring, “We’ve been trying to warn you guys for so many decades. The scientists of the world have been being ignored. And it’s gotta stop. We’re going to lose everything.”

Global Report

In the video, his shaking voice and his powerful words highlight the importance and urgency for the government and the people to step up and demand climate action.

He is not alone. Scientists from all around the world are protesting to demand an end to burning fossil fuels and government actions.

At the National Congress in Spain, scientists dumped fake blood on the steps to symbolize “the blood of all those who have died because of the climate crisis, the blood of all those who will die” according to Victor de Santos. He was a participant in the demonstration, an environmentalist showing support for the cause.

Scientists are being arrested for their civil disobedience. Many, like Rose Abramoff, have never participated in civil disobedience—until now. Abramoff is a scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and according to Scientific American, her actions did not reflect her institution.
The measures scientists are taking to risk their careers and lives to demonstrate in front of the world highlight the urgency of our current climate crisis.

Trusting science and facts is accepting the truth. The truth needs to be heard. It is not the time to ignore or turn heads.

Now is the time to act.
