Behind Her Back

Illustrated by Chloe Lee.  All rights reserved.

How could one fail to cherish Nature’s gifts?

When she loves you so—

Beautiful fields, bountiful oceans, fresh air.

As you drive the roads man has built, you admire the lush greenery that surrounds your path

You wander the same trail through the changing seasons:

flowers blooming into deep orange leaves,

flow into barren branches,

sprout with new buds,

then back again to blooming flowers.

A never-ending cycle that’s admired throughout your years.

You spend long afternoons playing in fresh grass,

feeling the sunlight warm your skin,

while feeling a brief, pleasant, cooling sensation as the breeze blows by.

How can someone not love her?

Yet, how can you spend your hours enjoying Nature when the latest video game calls you?

Hours consumed by screens, simulated “nature”, recycled air.

As you drive the roads man has built,

you admire the crazed graphics that’s produced by the media,

no longer looking up to acknowledge the beauty of redwoods towering over you.

You progress from level to level until the final level is complete, feeling accomplished for a fleeting moment.

A dopamine-filled cycle which restarts as you spend more and more.

Your device entraps you in your room as days go by, and you slouch in your chair, growing more addicted, more tired, more bored while you stare into a screen.

How can someone not be drawn into this?

How can you admire Nature, when work calls you?

Organized cubicles, stark white walls, coffee breath.

As you mindlessly drive through freeways man has built, you dread reaching your destination, no longer caring to question where the flowering bushes have gone.

You type email after email, as you receive a call from your boss with a new promotion, and for a moment, you feel useful

A weary cycle that keeps you afloat amidst a financial crisis.

You spend years gaining seniority little by little until you feel free enough to live your own life instead of this robotic routine

How can someone not feel trapped?

How can you refuse Nature’s calls when she has given so much to you?

Blazing temperatures, plastic choked oceans, atmospheres clogged with smog.

As you now walk the trails which Nature has built, you question where the towering oaks have gone.

You return to the same trail you had explored all those years ago,

wondering when all the seasons started to blur together,

when rain stopped falling in January,

and when summers broke records yearly, feeling empty.

A never-ending cycle that had seemed to end all within a lifetime.

You spend hours flipping back years that contained the most fantastic colors and flourishing vegetation, but for now, all you see is bland greys and towering skyscrapers.

How could you not hear her?
