Additionally, businesses that rely on agricultural products, such as food processing companies, may experience reduced supplies, affecting their operations and profitability.
Environmental Impacts
Droughts can cause significant environmental damage. Reduced water levels in rivers and lakes can harm aquatic ecosystems, leading to fish kills and loss of biodiversity. For example, Mexico is experiencing its most widespread and severe drought in over a decade, with water levels in some regions so low that the effects are visible from space.
Additionally, dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires, which can destroy habitats and release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, further contributing to climate change.

In Ecuador, for example, the government has expanded daily power cuts to up to 14 hours due to a severe drought affecting water levels at key hydroelectric plants, which provide over 70% of the country’s electricity.

To mitigate the impacts of drought, it’s essential to implement water conservation practices, develop drought-resistant crops, and improve water management systems. Communities can also invest in infrastructure to store water during wet periods for use during droughts. Understanding the multifaceted impacts of drought is crucial for developing effective strategies to cope with and adapt to these challenging conditions.
